Zefirant (Zephyranthes Herb.) – rodzaj roślin z rodziny amarylkowatych. Obejmuje 180 gatunków, występujących w Ameryce Południowej, Ameryce Środkowej oraz w Meksyku i Stanach Zjednoczonych w Ameryce Północnej[3]. Introdukowany do południowej Afryki, południowej i południowo-wschodniej Azji i północno-wschodniej Australii[3].

Zwykle sezonowe, rzadziej wiecznie zielone, zazwyczaj równowąskie, rzadziej taśmowate lub nitkowate, kanalikowate lub płaskie, niekiedy mięsiste, o długości 10–60 cm i szerokości 1–13 mm. Wierzchołek ostry do tępego lub zaokrąglonego. Użyłkowanie liścia równoległe. U niektórych gatunków wyrastające na nibyogonkach stworzonych z nasady blaszki liściowej, o długości 2–9 cm[5].
Kwiaty
Pojedyncze lub rzadziej dwa do sześciu zebrane w kwiatostan, wyrastający na okrągłym na przekroju lub nitkowatym, pustym w środku głąbiku, o długości 2-30 cm (niekiedy pozostającym pod ziemią), wsparty dwiema błoniastymi podsadkami, zrośniętymi brzegami w rurkę do połowy wysokości lub całkowicie i wtedy powyżej dwudzielne lub dziurkowane, rzadziej całe, o długości 0,8–6 cm. Każdy kwiat wsparty jest nitkowatolancetowatą do równowąskolancetowatej przysadką. Okwiat lekko lub znacznie grzbiecisty lub promienisty, rurkowaty do miskowatego lub dzwonkowaty do talerzykowatego, rzadziej trzy górne listki odgięte do góry, a trzy dolne odchylone i zwijające się proksymalnie, przypominające warżki. Listki okwiatu niemal wolne lub zrośnięte u nasady w rurkę, odwrotnielancetowate do eliptycznych lub jajowatych, rzadziej wąskolancetowate lub sierpowate, zwykle białe do różowych, rzadziej żółte, czerwone, karminowe lub liliowe, niekiedy paskowane, albo jaśniejsze, ciemniejsze lub zielono zabarwione u nasady, o długości 0,6–7 cm i szerokości 2–24 mm. Przykoronek, jeżeli obecny, niewyrazisty. Pręciki o nitkowatych nitkach, proste lub wygięte. Zalążnia dolna. Szyjka słupka zakończona główkowato-trójwrębnym do trójdzielnego znamieniem[5].

Kulisto-trójgraniaste torebki, niekiedy bocznie spłaszczone, zawierają półeliptyczne do niemal trójkątnych płaskie, czarne, papierzaste, niekiedy oskrzydlone nasiona[5].

Nazwa naukowa rodzaju pochodzi od greckiego słów ζέφυρος(Zephyros – Zefir, wiatr zachodni) i άνθος (anthos – kwiat)[9].
Nazwy zwyczajowe w języku polskim
Polska nazwa rodzaju Phycella: zefirant, obok zefyrantes, zefirek, zetyrantus, zefirzyn, lilia Lange i zefiryna, wskazana została już w Słowniku polskich imion rodzajów oraz wyższych skupień roślin z roku 1900 Józefa Rostafińskiego[10].

Zastosowanie

Zefirant biały w uprawie
Rośliny ozdobne
Niektóre gatunki są uprawiane jako rośliny pokojowe, a w krajach o cieplejszym klimacie (strefy 9–11) również jako ogrodowe[11]. Rośliny nie są całkiem mrozoodporne, więc można uprawiać je tylko w najcieplejszych regionach Polski. Cebule sadzi się w ciepłym, słonecznym miejscu na przedwiośniu lub jesienią, warstwa gleby nie powinna być grubsza niż 2 cm. Zimą przykrywać należy torfem o grubości 20 cm. Uprawa również w pojemnikach. Rozmnażanie przez cebulki przybyszowe lub nasiona.
Rośliny lecznicze
Niektóre gatunki zefirantu stosowane są w ziołolecznictwie. Z. minuta stosowany jest w leczeniu raka i cukrzycy. Roślina ta zawiera alkaloidy: pankratystatynę, tazetynę i likorynę[12].
