Polyphaga merupakan subordo kumbang yang jumlahnya paling besar dan beragam. Nama ini diturunkan dari dua kata Yunani: poly-, artinya 'banyak', dan phagein, artinya 'makan', sehingga subordo ini mengandung makna "pemakan banyak hal". Polyphaga terdiri dari 144 familia dalam 16 superfamilia, dan menunjukkan keragaman luas varietas dalam hal spesialisasi dan adaptasi, dengan lebih dari 300.000 spesies yang tercatat, atau sekitar 90% seluruh spesies kumbang yang pernah ditemukan.
Ciri khas Polyphaga terletak pada coxa (dasar) kaki belakang, yaitu tidak membagi plat abdominal/ventral pertama dan kedua yang dikenal sebagai sternit. Juga, tidak mempunyai notopleural suture (biasanya ditemukan di bawah pronotal shield).[1]
Klasifikasi
Lima infraordo dalam subordo ini adalah:
- Bostrichiformia — termasuk furniture beetle dan skin beetle
- Cucujiformia — termasuk lady beetle, kumbang tanduk panjang, weevil, checkered beetle dan leaf beetle
- Elateriformia — termasuk click beetle dan fireflies
- Scarabaeiformia — termasuk kumbang scarab dan stag beetle
- Staphyliniformia — termasuk rove beetle dan water scavenger beetles
Klasifikasi internal Polyphaga meliputi beberapa superfamilia atau seri, yang anggotanya relatif stabil, meskipun sejumlah familia yang lebih kecil (yang rankingnya masih diperdebatkan) dipindahkan ke klad yang berbeda oleh berbagai penulis. Superfamilia besar termasuk Hydrophiloidea, Staphylinoidea, Scarabaeoidea, Buprestoidea, Byrrhoidea, Elateroidea, dan Bostrichoidea.
Infraordo Cucujiformia meliputi mayoritas besar kumbang fitofag ("pemakan tumbuhan"), disatukan berdasarkan Malpighian tubule [cryptonephric berjenis normal, sebuah omatidium berbentuk kerucut dengan rhabdom terbuka, dan tidak adanya spiracle fungsional pada segmen abdominal kedelapan. Anggota superfamilia Cucujiformia adalah Cleroidea, Cucujoidea, Tenebrionoidea, Chrysomeloidea, dan Curculionoidea. Jelas bahwa pengadopsian gaya hidup phytophagous berhubungan dengan keragaman takson dalam kumbang, dengan Cucujiformia, terutama weevil (Curculionoidea), membentuk radiasi utama.
