The 2027 FISU Summer World University Games, known also as the XXXIII Summer World University Games, or the 33rd Summer Universiade, and commonly known as Chungcheong 2027, is a multi-sport event scheduled from 1 to 12 August 2027 in Chungcheong Province, South Korea. The province was confirmed as the host city for the games on 12 November 2022.[1] This will be the fourth time in the history that the event will be held in South Korea after being held for the third time after the most recent 2015 Summer Universiade held in Gwangju.
Bidding process
Chungcheong and North Carolina (United States) were the candidates in the running to host the 2027 edition. Chungcheong was selected on 12 November 2022 at the FISU executive committee in Brussels, Belgium.[2]
Sports
In addition to the 15 mandatory sports, the organizing committee could choose up to three more respecting the infrastructure and local demands. The bid committee proposed rowing and sailing as optional sports. This will be the third time in a row that rowing has been chosen as an optional sport, as it was in Chengdu 2021, while waa sailing planned to return after for the first time since Napoli 2019[3] Despite this, infrastructure issues led to changes in plans and the Organizing Committee reviewed its planning in 2024, and decided that, in respect with local demands, maintain rowing and replace sailing and football proposed in the bid with golf and beach volleyball, which it remains in this status for two consecutive editions.[4]
